I was as the one who does not want… to think about things that serve less than the
international cucumbers of the anti-Spanish tort! And I asked myself... Why not
widening, the miserable knowledge with something more pleasant? Something as
well as, the relation that exists between the refishing of anchovies, Diodones,
crocodiles and sharks settled in the Cantabrian coast. To begin I thought and
where I go to find, the suitable material that could carry my knowledge to good
port. You are going to think that I have a lot of imagination or that I am all
the whole blessed day in the net. But… it went as well as happened… and… this
way I tell it to you…
I had just
finished of selecting a few books when, to one of which was in the shelving,
him wings grew and he rushed, succeeding squarely in my head. As if he had listened me it launched to me as an ardent lover and without permission he establishes
himself, in my arms.
The book, of which
name I do not think to forget, calls,"Acciughe salate alla vera carne”:
Historia de los salazoneros italianos en Cantabria. We look each other and we
decide to spend a good time together. After defoliating ourselves, wildly,
askance I look at other one that in, the exceeded
happened passion, also, had pricipitated, of this time, but, at the emptiness:
" Porticello Santa Flavia - Ondarroa " … Paesi di mare… ". The
unusual couple was speaking about anchovies and they
were doing it in languages that the good God wanted to give, them, to understand,
the first one, in Spanish and other one in Italian. This is all what had happened…I you
swear it for the Little Heart of the Jesus! And indeed… indeed… I say to you
that the refishing has been productive and substantial.
There is nothing
better and more productive than a brotherhood between peoples and cultures. And
like this, of the hand of, Luís Javier Escudero Domínguez and Nicolò Lo Coco
Sanfilippo, joined by the magic thread and seducer of a last time, between
networks, meshes and salt; the fishing ports of the Cantabrian and Sicilian Coast are walked by the conserves owners and
workers: Castro-Urdiales, Colindres, Laredo
" Che pezzo di bel liberi! Alla vera carne! “That piece of books no doubt, is
really tasteful!

Them, mentioned,
books are, in if, a real handcrafted jewel that illustrates, recreates and transports
the vulgar one of the mortal ones to spaces of long ago. They are small
remnants of history of the hard-working people, fisherman and sailor in direct
contact with the sea and his elements. There in their own earth. Hand to hand.
Together with their entrepreneurs’ demiurges, well are these, businessmen or
diligent workers.
The reading of
these two beautiful specimens has woken up, in my memory and spirit
recollections of very difficult times, not for it, less happy or disposable...
...The place where
one was working, in that time, was an old, humid and ramshackle place. In one
of Jacinto Lococo Cortázar's manuscripts, he calls it, the local of Salas. The
above mentioned place had but his captivation and ingenuity, Nicolò Lo Coco
Cefalú, invented a great object to facilitate the cleanliness of the tins of
anchovies that were working out dipped of oil and that had to be cleaned
manually. He mounted a barrel with a few big pulleys, this one, was turning on
an axis that was working with electricity. There…there were getting the tins
that then were drying off introducing them in sawdust. The final touch of the
artesian cleanliness was to brush them with a brush of polishing shoes... All
the workers, mainly women, who were employed at the above mentioned place,
still, remember fondly that odd so called well and famous, appliance… “The
bass-drum ", for the noise that was putting… “The Bass-drum ", it was
guarded as relic… together with… “the eight hundred”… vehicle in which…Jacinto
Lococo Cortázar…was throwing the life… to himself… for the tortuous roads… and
rough terrain… that go… from Castro-Urdiales… to… Castellón
de la Plana
So much the book
written in Spanish, as, that writing in Italian, they use the verb in perfect
harmony with the topic, without flakes or difficulty obtaining, with it, a
pleasant and light reading.
Both have
contributed by knowledge that, till then, I did not know. A surprising, not
alone example for me but for other persons, lovers of the sea and of his
peoples, it is the information contributed by the author, in which * (2)
Jacinto Cortázar Urresti, native of Lekeitio and mother`s grandfather of Jacinto
Lococo Cortázar, already then, he was managing a company of salting, in society
with Bárcenas, in the place of his property, situated, in Castro-Urdiales, 14,
Siglo XX Street * (1) 12/8/1940, the above mentioned place was confiscated by
the former regime.

Urresti, * (2) Josefa Cortázar Zaballa, (married with Nicolò Lo Coco Cefalú),
recovered for herself the
property, she donated the same one to her daughter, * (3) Narcisa Lo Coco
Cortázar, (1969). * (4) Narcisa Lo Coco Cortázar and her husband Pedro López
Bengoechea, constructed in the above mentioned lot social housings of degree 1
º.
More pleasing,
yet, it was to find the name with the one that was working, Nicolò Lo Coco
Cefalú and the year that became free of his father-in-law, Jacinto Cortázar
Urresti. Nicolò Lo Coco Cefalú, established himself for his account, in 1929 adopting
the trade name of, * (3), Lo Coco and Company.
In the same way,
it has been of great help to know that besides, the * (@1) seizure of the
estate suffered for, Jacinto Cortázar Urresti, also, the production of the
factory had been * (4) seized by the former regime, in the date 4/2/1936.
Hereby and guiding by the information of the table, n º 23, of the mentioned
book, I managed to know that the goods seized in the place situated in the
street Siglo XX, 14, could be to equal parts of Jacinto Cortázar Urresti and his partner Bárcenas. After the
death of * (5), Jacinto Cortazar Urresti, 29/5/1935, without testing, this half was corresponding to the widow and
children, namely Narcisa Zaballa Castañondo, José Cortázar Zaballa, (right hand
of the Socialist Indalecio Prieto), Josefa Cortázar Zaballa and Valero Cortázar
Zaballa, (called Chomin). According to the spilt, previously, for the author,
Nicolò Lo Coco Cefalú, came to Castro-Urdiales, (without be knowing like), and
he was working with his father-in-law, Jacinto Cortázar Urresti, until 1929,
but, according to the information, also, contributed by the writer, Luís Javier
Escudero Domínguez, Nicolò Lo Coco Cefalú, continued being employed at the
place of the father-in-law, until 1933, for then, to continue being employed at
places of rent. For what * (4), the goods seized by the former regime, with
date of 4/12/1936, in the place situated in, C/Siglo XX, 14 of Castro-Urdiales,
are more that probable it did not belong to, Nicolò Lo Coco Cefalú, but to the
legitimate inheritors of his father-in-law Jacinto Cortázar Urresti and to the
partner of this one, Bárcenas.
As I was reading
the book, I surprise, deeply, that such one, * (3) Lo Coco and Company, does
not return to give signs of life in any of the references of the book; neither
in the tables of export nor in no other part. In the same way, it worries me,
the lack of specificity, in relation to the names used to designate a person
whose name and surnames, in Sicily
"Mia cara Sicilia, diceva Jacinto!"
Precisely, poking,
removing and sailing in the wonderful world of the investigation, I meet, of
pure coincidence, an author whose name and surname is the same, to that of the
father of Jacinto Lococo Cortázar, namely, Nicolò Lo Coco Cefalú. This writer
takes Sanfilippo as the second surname, but, on having omitted, the second
surname, gives place, to an unbearable confusion. At first sight, in the book
“… Paesi di mare…” it is not possible to know, to certain science, who is who,
if the commission agent of salting, Nicolò Lo Coco Cefalú or the writer, Nicolò
Lo Coco Sanfilippo. He could be even, very same, a grandfather of the writer or
his great-great-grand-father because in Sicily
Regarding to the
information about the so called company, * (5) Nicola Lo Coco and his
permanency in assets of 1937 to 1991. Such a company does not exist in the
Mercantile Record. Nicolò Lo Coco Cefalú, was a commission agent, he was
working for the Consorcio and had died in 1980.
The commercial
relations between, Nicolò Lo Coco Cefalú and the Consorcio, came to his end in
1968, according to the manuscript confirmed of, Jacinto Lococo Cortázar and the
corresponding documentary checking.
The page, 231, of
the book, * (1) " Acciughe salate alla vera carne … "gives an information complete and
absolutely, uncertain and suspicious. It was not, Jacinto Lococo Cortázar, whom
stops working for the Consorcio, but, Nicolò Lo Coco Cefalú, who was working
and appearing with license addressed to Nicolás Lo
Coco.
In what says respect to the company called, *
(5) Conservas Nicola Lo Coco S.A., first it was called, Sea-Fish España S.A.
Constituted in the office of a notary of, José Jesús del Arenal y Bedoya, the day 27/2/1984. Mercantile
register of Santander

And since, my
kindness should not be confused with weakness… and that always it is necessary
to give to Caesar which belongs to Caesar. I want to leave clear good that,
Jacinto Lococo Cortázar, worked as commission agent and with own license,
addressed to, Jacinto Lococo Cortázar, sent for, the Union Spanish Organization
Provincial Delegation of Santander and sealed for, the Provincial Union of the Fishing,
on March 12, 1965. Working as commission agent, he perceived rather for
elaborated kilo. In 1966, Jacinto Lococo Cortázar worked for Marino, in 1967
for his friend Navone, (Pelazza), and for the Rocca and in 1968, worked for Orlando la Plana.
Nevertheless, it
is necessary to assure, that Jacinto Lococo Cortázar, born in Porticello, "Quanto e bello Porticello!"
As the Spanish grandmothers say: For sample a button! It is easy to demonstrate Jacinto Lococo Cortázar's activity and the activity of his company Conservas Nicola Lo Coco SA., only in the Confraternity of Castro-Urdiales, Jacinto Lococo he managed to buy, in three day, the amount of: 2.887.451, 59, pesetas. The above mentioned operation realized it freelance, with the license of purchase above mentioned. The merchandise was paid by Jacinto Lococo Cortázar, addressed to Jacinto Lococo Cortázar, by Castro-Urdiales's Hispanic American bank. The delivery notes of purchase of several items of anchovy, addressed to Jacinto Lococo Cortázar , were sent for, the Fishermen's Union Confraternity " Noble Cabildo de San Andrés y San Pedro " of Castro-Urdiales and compensated by Castro-Urdiales's Hispanic American bank, on May sixth, 1977.
I neither can, nor
have to, overlook, the oblivion or lack of documentation, with regard to the
famous patents of anchovies, Angelo Parodi and Vella that, along the whole
book, the author has come, finely, peeling. Only two punctuals information is
absent in order that, the work, it be almost perfect. The information is the
following ones: The patent, Angelo Parodi FU B.EO, and the name,
"Conchilla Azul", was bought on May 23, 1973, to the marriage, Maria
Francisca Herrero Elosua and Felipo Cusimano Lafata by Jacinto Lococo
Cortázar the officialdom of
the purchase was realized in the office of a notary of Mr José Graiño in
Castro-Urdiales. Another fact, very significant, is about the brand, Vella, it
was a property of Jacinto Lococo Cortázar. The patent, Vella, came to make a
part of the company Sea-Fish España S.A, constituted in the office of a notary
Arenal for the notary Jesus Maria del Arenal y Bedoya on February 2, 1984. The
name of the company was modified in the office of a notary Arenal, the day
4/6/1984 for that of Conservas Nicola Lo Coco S.A. supporting everything
stipulated in the previous seat.
It is of justice
to say that first one of the manufacturers to elaborating the fishing of the
Mediterranean one was Jacinto Lococo, concretely in Grao of Castellón de la Plana where
he acquired a place and later other one.
To collation of
what the writer,* (a) Nicolò Lo Coco Sanfilippo, says is precise clarify more
than that one of the persons who announced the name of Sicily throughout was
Jacinto Lococo Cortázar , with his own company,
Conservas Nicola Lo Coco
S.A, with the mentioned and different patents of own crop. The reputation of
the company, Conservas Nicola Lo Coco S.A., it came up to such a level that
received of the Department of Economy and Estate and of the Secretariat of
State of Trade, Exporter's Letter of 2 ª category with force of January 1, 1986
until December 31, 1989.
The writer Lo Coco Sanfilippo does a
well-deserved distinction, respect the Excelllency and Hon., Gaetano Lo Coco Cortázar, in
his book.

Yes, everything mentioned
above is true as is also that together with the necklace of Queen Isabel the
Catholic, The Excellency and Hon. Gaetano Lo Coco Cortázar, also known as
Cayetano Lococo Cortázar and so one so one
has in his credit, among other properties, four social housings, degree,
1º. These properties are located in Castro-Urdiales ,
Spain
Until now, the benefices of
Inmobiliaria Diodon SA are managed by the sons of the Excellency and Hon.
Gaetano Lo Coco Cortázar, Nicola Lo Coco Serrao and Francesco Lo Coco Serrao.
The author tells a
real truth, the offspring of such illustrious branch does not follow the
tradition. The important family instead of salting anchovies is dedicated to
salting “diodons”.
The natural rhythm of the book
is important the same as the fine photographs provided. It is noted, but the
absence of such an illustrious lord face the fact that, to me, seems should be
addressed. Maybe these pictures saved by his brother, Giacinto Lo Coco
Cortázar, help to fill the unforgivable void.
It would be beneficial for the history that these two authors, simultaneously, so near some and so far away of others, could confirm the common documents avoiding, insipidities and saltings, non-existent, because, Nicolò Lo Coco Cefalú, could not have in his credit, in addition, the gift of the ubiquity and be in two countries simultaneously. This way, in the warlike national period, 1936/1939 and world, 1940/1943, almost all the Sicilians return her mother land. Among them, Nicolò Lo Coco Cefalú, with his wife and children the writer, Nicolò Lo Coco Sanfilippo says,

The same author reports as the commissioners of Spain return Sicily

I believe, that all this confusion of names surnames, dates, belongings and proprieties,
in addition, of the well-known omissions, only can be due to the fountain where
it has been drunk. If the source is bad and
pernicious, the information will be contaminated and the information, directed,
more that to do history, it modify with the consequent loss of genuineness,
reality and veracity values that always must constitute the essence of an epoch.
